Their travels are marked by mysterious deaths and rumors surrounding Ruthven. Aubrey eventually becomes suspicious, especially after witnessing Ruthven's predatory behavior towards a young woman. The two have a falling out, and Aubrey continues his journey alone.

In Greece, Aubrey falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Ianthe. However, his happiness is threatened when Ruthven reappears and seems to take an interest in Ianthe. Aubrey fears for her safety and the story takes a dark turn, hinting at the possibility that Ruthven is not quite mortal and that his intentions are far from pure
