The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde tells the story of a young man named Dorian Gray, whose exceptional beauty captivates the artist Basil Hallward. Basil paints Dorian's portrait, and while sitting for it, Dorian falls under the influence of Lord Henry Wotton, a charismatic but cynical man who espouses a hedonistic philosophy.
Lord Henry believes that beauty and pleasure are the only things worth pursuing in life. Dorian, captivated by this idea, makes a fateful wish: that the portrait would age instead of him, allowing him to maintain his youthful beauty forever.
This wish has horrifying consequences. As Dorian pursues a life of indulgence and vice, the portrait bears the marks of his corrupted soul, becoming increasingly grotesque while Dorian remains unchanged.
