Contes populaires de Lorraine, comparés avec les contes des autres provinces de France et des pays étrangers (Folk tales of Lorraine, compared with those of other provinces of France and foreign countries) is a two-volume work by French folklorist Emmanuel Cosquin, first published in 1887. The work is a comprehensive collection of traditional folk tales from the Lorraine region of France, as well as comparisons of these tales to similar tales from other parts of France and Europe.
Volume 1 of the work contains an essay on the origin and dissemination of European folk tales, followed by 60 tales from Lorraine. The tales are categorized into different types, such as animal tales, legends, and Märchen. Each tale is accompanied by a commentary in which Cosquin compares it to similar tales from other traditions.
Volume 2 of the work contains an additional 60 tales from Lorraine, as well as an index of all the tales in both volumes.
Contes populaires de Lorraine is an important work of scholarship that has been used by folklorists and scholars of literature for many years. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the folk tales of Lorraine or in the comparative study of folk tales in general.
