Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (29 September 1547 – 22 April 1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, playwright, soldier, and historian. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, which is widely considered to be the first modern novel and one of the greatest works of world literature.
Early Life and Education
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, on 29 September 1547. He was the third of seven children born to Rodrigo de Cervantes and Leonor de Cortinas. Cervantes's father was a surgeon, and his mother was the daughter of a lawyer.
Cervantes received a good education, studying at the University of Salamanca. He also traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting Italy, France, and Portugal.
Literary Career
Cervantes began writing as a young man, and he published his first work, a collection of poems called "Cancionero de Romances," in 1569. He also wrote several plays, including "La Numancia" and "La Galatea."
In 1571, Cervantes joined the Spanish navy and fought in the Battle of Lepanto. He was wounded in the battle and lost the use of his left hand.
After the battle, Cervantes returned to Spain and continued to write. He published his first novel, "La Galatea," in 1585.
In 1587, Cervantes was arrested for debt and imprisoned for five years. While in prison, he began writing "Don Quixote."
"Don Quixote" was published in two parts, the first in 1605 and the second in 1615. The novel tells the story of Don Quixote, a nobleman who has read too many chivalric romances. Don Quixote believes himself to be a knight-errant, and he sets out on a series of adventures.
"Don Quixote" was an immediate success, and it is now considered to be one of the greatest works of world literature. The novel has been translated into over 100 languages and has been adapted into numerous films, television shows, and operas.
Cervantes also wrote several other works, including the novel "Novelas ejemplares" (1613) and the play "El cerco de Numancia" (1615).
Death
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra died in Madrid, Spain, on 22 April 1616. He was buried in the Convent of las Trinitarias Descalzas.
