Baroness Emmuska Orczy

Baroness Emmuska Orczy (1865-1947) was a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright. She is best known for her adventure novels, including The Scarlet Pimpernel, which has been adapted into numerous films and television series.

Orczy was born in Tarnaörs, Hungary, to a wealthy aristocratic family. She was educated in Brussels and Paris, and then studied art in London. She married English artist Montague Barstow in 1894.

Orczy began writing in the early 1890s, and her first novel, The Emperor's Candlesticks, was published in 1899. However, it was not until the publication of The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1905 that she achieved widespread success. The novel is a swashbuckling tale about a group of British aristocrats who rescue French aristocrats from the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. The Scarlet Pimpernel was an immediate success, and it spawned a number of sequels, including The Elusive Pimpernel (1908), The Way of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1933), and Sir Percy Leads the Band (1940).

In addition to her adventure novels, Orczy also wrote a number of detective stories, including Lady Molly of Scotland Yard (1910), Unravelled Knots (1925), and The Case of the Vanishing Man (1927). She also wrote several plays, including The Scarlet Pimpernel (1903), Beau Geste (1927), and The Old Man in the Corner (1929).

Orczy was a prolific writer and published over 50 books during her lifetime. Her works were translated into many languages and became popular all over the world. She was also a successful playwright, and her plays were performed in London and New York City.

Orczy died in Henley-on-Thames, England, in 1947 at the age of 82. She is considered one of the most important British adventure writers of all time. Her work continues to be read and enjoyed by people all over the world.
