François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) was a French writer, politician, diplomat, and historian who is considered one of the most important figures in French Romanticism. Life and Career
Chateaubriand was born into a noble family in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France. He was educated at the Collège de Dinan and the Collège de Combourg. In 1786, he joined the French army, but he soon resigned his commission and traveled to England and America.
After returning to France in 1792, Chateaubriand became involved in politics. He was a supporter of the monarchy and he fought against the revolutionaries during the French Revolution. After the fall of the Robespierrists in 1794, Chateaubriand went into exile in England, where he lived for seven years.
