François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) was a French writer, politician, diplomat, and historian who is considered one of the most important figures in French Romanticism. His other works include the apologetic essay Génie du christianisme (1802), the travelogue Itinéraire de Paris à Jérusalem (1811), and his posthumously published memoirs Mémoires d'outre-tombe (1848-1850).

Life and Career

Chateaubriand was born into a noble family in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France. He was educated at the Collège de Dinan and the Collège de Combourg. In 1786, he joined the French army, but he soon resigned his commission and traveled to England and America.

After returning to France in 1792, Chateaubriand became involved in politics. He was a supporter of the monarchy and he fought against the revolutionaries during the French Revolution. After the fall of the Robespierrists in 1794, Chateaubriand went into exile in England, where he lived for seven years.

In 1800, Chateaubriand returned to France under the amnesty of the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte. He soon became a supporter of Bonaparte and he was appointed secretary to the embassy in Rome. However, he fell out with Bonaparte over his religious policies and he resigned his post in 1804.

After the fall of Napoleon in 1814, Chateaubriand was appointed ambassador to Switzerland. He was also a member of the Chamber of Deputies and he played a role in the restoration of the monarchy.
