  • Born: Johanna Louise Heusser on June 12, 1827, in Hirzel, Switzerland.
  • Family life: Part of a large family with parents, siblings, cousins, and a grandmother. Her father was a doctor and her mother a poet. She married Bernhard Spyri, a lawyer, in 1852. They had one son who sadly passed away along with her husband in 1884.
  • Early inspiration: Spyri spent parts of her childhood near Chur in Graubünden, a place that would later inspire the settings of her novels.
  • Death: Died in Zurich, Switzerland on July 7, 1901, at the age of 74.
